Narratives


 I read about the actions of ICE, particularly their use of force. One side says it was justified, self-defense. The other side tells a different story, murder. It feels like ICE is reacting instead of taking action. An event happens where there is a loss of life, and there is a scramble to tell the story from the perspective of the officer. Even with what looks like evidence to the contrary, ICE sticks to their story. I am beginning to feel like ICE is operating on the "Shoot first, make up the story later"...

Authority and Obedience

I teach Research Methods to Social Work Students. Last night the topic of discussion was ethics in research. I looked for a video of the Stanly Milgram experiment from 1960s to show to my class. I remember seeing a film about these experiments in the early 80s in my intro to psychology class. I still have a vivid memory of watching this film. One of the most unethical experiments on human subjects. I like using the experiment as one of the reasons that protections on human subjects has evolved since that time. Before class, I searched google to see if I could find a short video of what I witnessed when I was a student. I found the link below and when I watched it, it not just taught me and the class about human subjects, but it also discussed topic of authority and becoming a dictator. Executive Orders, executive orders… Changes!

  In the past we have witnessed Executive Order after Executive Order signed by the President. Order regarding DEI, Immigration, Federal funding, Pardons among others. I can understand that a President wants to make a mark in his first 90 days in office. With this President, it has been one thing then another thing then another. It is so much to keep up with. I read the news each day and there is a new story to read regarding the president and his orders. We are only a week and a half into his term. What is next? is a prevailing thought for many. Some people are uneasy. For me, it is witnessing the country that I grew up in change in this week and a half. How long can we keep up this rate of change? I am just scratching the surface as I gather my own thoughts each day. So much to think about and its effects in the short term and the long term.  Most of the time change can be good.
