I teach Research Methods to Social Work Students. Last night the topic of discussion was ethics in research. I looked for a video of the Stanly Milgram experiment from 1960s to show to my class. I remember seeing a film about these experiments in the early 80s in my intro to psychology class. I still have a vivid memory of watching this film. One of the most unethical experiments on human subjects. I like using the experiment as one of the reasons that protections on human subjects has evolved since that time. Before class, I searched google to see if I could find a short video of what I witnessed when I was a student. In the past week, Donald Trump’s son, Eric, learned a valuable lesson. Two sisters that attended his event reminded him of his introductory Spanish course. One of the Sisters wore a t=shirt that said, “Latinas Contra Trump.” Now this is not a positive endorsement of Donald Trump. This t-shirt went viral after it was posted on Instagram. The lesson to learn. Make sure you understand the meaning of the words that others are using particularly in their context. Their words might mean something different in another language. In this case, Contra or Contrary, are the words. The most important for Donald Trump, is the learned about the others and how they communicate with each other.

Donald Trump has offended many people, including, Women, Minorities and Disabled people to name a few. He has had good numbers since he began his run for President. He somehow received forgiveness from those that support his Candidacy for these actions. Over the last month new revelations have come into the news. It appears that these news revelations have done little to the Candidate Trump. These revelations have hurt many people for a while and continue to hurt people. The question, that I have is how much more will we let this man get away with?…Is this who we have become?

The movie American Sniper is #1 at the box office once again. It aims to portray the effect war has on individuals and families. The reviews and audience reaction are good. What is not good is the debate over where the main character is a patriot or a psychotic killer. Some in Hollywood have express the dislike for the film, like Michael Moore and Seth Rogen, saying that Chris Kyle was just a coward and a murderer. Others have countered this argument with Kyle begin a war hero, Sarah Palin and all at Fox News. The director, Clint Eastwood, says he wanted to present how war is difficult it is for soldiers and families. The film is based on a true story, the film does not aim to be a true story of Chris Kyle. If that was the case, Chris Kyle’s book tour and his encounter with former Minnesota Governor, Jesse Ventura would have been presented. Today I was helping a colleague understand the results of the last class she gave her class of upper division college students. She kept telling me that she was not teaching well, she felt she did not do enough to prepare the class for the exam. We looked at the results of the exam and compared them to the scores on the first exam of the semester. The scores are supposed to drop off from the first exam, because of the difficulty of the course. It is a research methods course that students need to complete to graduate with their Bachelor’s degree. Through the magic of blackboard, we did item analysis, statistics that give the percentage of correct answers and the percentage of each of the wrong answers. This was a multiple choice exam. The statistics essentially say that the student did not student enough. Some would get the correct answer, but many would choose all of the other wrong answers. Some of the questions were designed to be easy, but still they would get the wrong answer...
