  Immigration The immigration crackdown began last night with raids in sanctuary cites including New York City. Over 500 undocumented migrants wanted for outstanding crimes were arrested. This would be the beginning of the immigration policy under the Trump administration. I wonder what took so long with arresting these migrants that have committed crimes. It is an interesting system. It is important to consider the percentage of migrants that commit crimes is low compared to those migrants that come to this country to work for their families. Migrants from Mexico can make $10-15 dollar an hour for a day’s work. Compared to making $10 a day for similar work in their country. In a month they can earn enough money to help their family in Mexico buy a car. This is one reason to come to the United States to work. The immigration system needs to be overhauled.  The last two weeks have showed us history that will be studied in the future. We had an attempted assassination on a presidential candidate. Then we had the Democratic presidential nominee, an incumbent, decide to not run. This opens us up to a possibility of the first woman president, that is African American. So, is the country ready for a female president? I would like to think yes, but I am not sure which side will come out to vote. I know what I would like to see, and I hope we get to see even more history that will be studied in the future. 

This past weekend we witnessed the dysfunction of Washington, of the Republican controlled congress, of the President and of the Democratic Party. Our leaders in Washington were trying to make a deal. A deal with the author of the Art of the Deal. Meetings and meetings and no deal. Commercials and tweets blaming each other. Tweets applauding the other party, then tweets saying that they caved. That’s like a bully hitting you in the stomach then asking if you are ok. Then hitting you again. Is the blame game for them or for their political base? Who looks better in this shutdown? Part of the deal is what to do with DACA recipients. They should have nothing to do with the government shutdown. The border wall should have nothing to do with this shutdown. For whatever reason, both issues are part of the “Deal.” So, if no deal is reached by February 8 th , who will be at fault? Trump made the "shithole" comment in an Oval Office meeting after lawmakers suggested restoring protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and several African nations. According to Trump these are the shithole countries. The comment is inappropriate. He needs to apologize for the remark as soon as possible, wait, it is already too late to apologize. What is frightening to me is that the white house did not apologize in their statement regarding the comment. Some media members also came to the defense of Trump’s inappropriate comment. Fox News Hosts Tucker Carlson and Jesse Watters defended Trump’s comments. Carlson stated, “Why can’t he say that?” While, Watters argued that the "forgotten men and women" who make up the president's base would approve of the comment. This comment alarms me. Immigration reform, again, was the big news story today. President Trump met with Republicans and Democrats to discuss a solution for 700,000 people that might face deportation if Congress does not fix DACA. The meeting was streamed online as if it were a reality show. Don’t we already have C-SPAN? The topic of Immigration always comes up when no other political issues need to be solved. This time a fix to DACA might be tied to a bill to avoid a government shutdown. Immigration has not be a political issue alone. The issue is raised before election for the House or the Senate or before the Presidential election. The issue is raised to either get votes from those who support immigration or to get votes from those that do not support immigration. The house and senate passed this historic tax reform, just in time for Christmas. Nice to have a gift from the Government.   Now on the Republican side the selling points focus on the middle class. For people who make less than $25,000 will see an average tax cut of $60. Those who earn between $49,000 and $86,000 will get about $900. Those in the top 1 percent of income — earning more than $733,000 — will receive around $51,000 in tax savings, the policy center said. Many Democrats focus on how Corporations benefit from this tax reform. The tax package provides a deep cut in the corporate rate, from 35 percent to 21 percent. On the individual side, about 80 percent of American households will get tax cuts next year, while about 5 percent will pay more, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. Alabama’s special election for the vacated United States Senate seat had favorable results for the Democratic party. Many people across the country were surprised and happy with the results of this election. I am happy that Roy Moore did not win this election. I do not agree with his values and morals and the part of the Republican party that he represents. I am Doug Jones won. I am surprised and not so surprised with the margin of victory. Something close to 40 % of registered voters participated in this election. 671,151 people in Alabama voted for Jones. He won by 20,715 votes, 1.5% more than Roy Moore, a very close race. 650,436 votes went to Moore. I am concerned that the margin of victory was not larger. Over 650,000 Alabama voters agree with Roy Moore’s values and his behavior. This was a small victory for Democratic party and the State of Alabama. Is the United States ready for it’s first Female President? Are we ready for a female in this country? Are men ready? In viewing the different media online and the social media sites, I question the choices of reporting and non reporting. This reporting does not favor Hillary. Could the media be shaping the election so that a female is not elected. Is a picture being painted that say no, not that woman, Hillary. Is just not a woman? Other countries have had women leaders for a while. Women are the majority in the United States. I wonder if women are ready for a woman to be President.

It is rigged!!! The election is rigged! This is the new argument that Donald Trump is presenting to his supporters. Elections are shaped by political ads and media every year. This is how politics work and have worked in the United States and other countries. This Presidential Election is not different yet it is different. Political ads are all over the media and the News media is placing the usual biases in their reporting depend on the Network. Social media is different; the internet is different. How messages are delivered to supporters is different. The main difference that I have noticed, how supporters are taking in the news, media and the messages sent by their candidates. The system is rigged or biased, like usual. The key is how each candidate is using the system to get out their message. Check the sources of your messages this election year and go vote.

The movie American Sniper is #1 at the box office once again. It aims to portray the effect war has on individuals and families. The reviews and audience reaction are good. What is not good is the debate over where the main character is a patriot or a psychotic killer. Some in Hollywood have express the dislike for the film, like Michael Moore and Seth Rogen, saying that Chris Kyle was just a coward and a murderer. Others have countered this argument with Kyle begin a war hero, Sarah Palin and all at Fox News. The director, Clint Eastwood, says he wanted to present how war is difficult it is for soldiers and families. The film is based on a true story, the film does not aim to be a true story of Chris Kyle. If that was the case, Chris Kyle’s book tour and his encounter with former Minnesota Governor, Jesse Ventura would have been presented. I have some thoughts about this Tea Party movement. I think it is great that Americans are taking advantage of free speech. It is one of the things that makes our country great. I have listened to their arguments and watch some election results last night. Some incumbents are out now. That is a good thing I believe. A couple of things are interesting to me. 1. the movement is wants their country back and does not want big government. 2. there is little support for the current president. I say where was this movement three years ago? Where was the movement when the economy came crashing down? Where was this movement when the last administration took a balance budget and turned it in to a deficit in less than four years? How can the current president be judged on his job when over half of his time has been spent on economic recovery, which is slowly happening. Is it just me? Have you had too much of the presidential election already? I appreciate both candidates and their wanting to be our next leader. It just seems like this process has been going on for a really long time. I appreciate having news as soon as possible but sometimes I think it gets out of hand. I also grew up with the evening news and the local right after. There were no cable news networks on 24/7. Back then the new was presented in about 23 minutes not counting commercials. National news was read at 5:30 pm CDT. That was all we needed to know then. There would be an interruption of your regular programming when absolutely necessary. Otherwise the national and local news was not delivered until the evening. Now we can get news as soon as it happens and sometimes as it happens. Many time things are corrected later because some things were not verified so quickly. I think it is great that we have news and media when we want it. I just wonder how much do we really need.
