I teach Research Methods to Social Work Students. Last night the topic of discussion was ethics in research. I looked for a video of the Stanly Milgram experiment from 1960s to show to my class. I remember seeing a film about these experiments in the early 80s in my intro to psychology class. I still have a vivid memory of watching this film. One of the most unethical experiments on human subjects. I like using the experiment as one of the reasons that protections on human subjects has evolved since that time. Before class, I searched google to see if I could find a short video of what I witnessed when I was a student. After our recent election and executive orders, particularly the order on immigration, how are people coping with this order. For some it is fear of being deported, which includes United States Citizens that might be targeted because they belong to the targeted Ethnic group. For United States Citizens that do not belong to the targeted ethnic group, is there a sense of entitlement? The two stories that I share makes me wonder if there is a sense of entitlement for some United States Citizens. The worker asking of the customer needs boxes does not sound so sincere.   In the past we have witnessed Executive Order after Executive Order signed by the President. Order regarding DEI, Immigration, Federal funding, Pardons among others. I can understand that a President wants to make a mark in his first 90 days in office. With this President, it has been one thing then another thing then another. It is so much to keep up with. I read the news each day and there is a new story to read regarding the president and his orders. We are only a week and a half into his term. What is next? is a prevailing thought for many. Some people are uneasy. For me, it is witnessing the country that I grew up in change in this week and a half. How long can we keep up this rate of change? I am just scratching the surface as I gather my own thoughts each day. So much to think about and its effects in the short term and the long term.  Most of the time change can be good.   Immigration The immigration crackdown began last night with raids in sanctuary cites including New York City. Over 500 undocumented migrants wanted for outstanding crimes were arrested. This would be the beginning of the immigration policy under the Trump administration. I wonder what took so long with arresting these migrants that have committed crimes. It is an interesting system. It is important to consider the percentage of migrants that commit crimes is low compared to those migrants that come to this country to work for their families. Migrants from Mexico can make $10-15 dollar an hour for a day’s work. Compared to making $10 a day for similar work in their country. In a month they can earn enough money to help their family in Mexico buy a car. This is one reason to come to the United States to work. The immigration system needs to be overhauled. This should include pathways for guest workers and other migrants that are hard working. This should also include pathwa...

Over 4 years ago, our US Capital was stormed by a group of US Citizens to stop a vote. The vote was to confirm President Elect Biden. The group was motivated to believe that the presidential election was rigged by outgoing President Trump. In the melee, many people were injured and some work killed. The group did not respect law enforcement and hurt and killed some. Over time 1500 were arrested and convicted for their planning and actions taken place. This event put the United States on a level has not seen before since the Civil War. In my opinion, this was an embarrassment to our country. The world was confused and some laughed. Fast forward to the first day of his second term as President. Donald Trump pardoned these 1500 individuals. People that disrespected law enforcement. People that assaulted law enforcement.  So Donald Trump is now the 47th President of the United States. What will he accomplish? Who will benefit from his administration? These are just a few questions on my mind. Will honor what he promised his constituents? Will that make the United States a better country? My hope is that we are all better in the next four years. Talks soon

This past weekend we witnessed the dysfunction of Washington, of the Republican controlled congress, of the President and of the Democratic Party. Our leaders in Washington were trying to make a deal. A deal with the author of the Art of the Deal. Meetings and meetings and no deal. Commercials and tweets blaming each other. Tweets applauding the other party, then tweets saying that they caved. That’s like a bully hitting you in the stomach then asking if you are ok. Then hitting you again. Is the blame game for them or for their political base? Who looks better in this shutdown? Part of the deal is what to do with DACA recipients. They should have nothing to do with the government shutdown. The border wall should have nothing to do with this shutdown. For whatever reason, both issues are part of the “Deal.” So, if no deal is reached by February 8 th , who will be at fault? Trump made the "shithole" comment in an Oval Office meeting after lawmakers suggested restoring protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and several African nations. According to Trump these are the shithole countries. The comment is inappropriate. He needs to apologize for the remark as soon as possible, wait, it is already too late to apologize. What is frightening to me is that the white house did not apologize in their statement regarding the comment. Some media members also came to the defense of Trump’s inappropriate comment. Fox News Hosts Tucker Carlson and Jesse Watters defended Trump’s comments. Carlson stated, “Why can’t he say that?” While, Watters argued that the "forgotten men and women" who make up the president's base would approve of the comment. This comment alarms me. Immigration reform, again, was the big news story today. President Trump met with Republicans and Democrats to discuss a solution for 700,000 people that might face deportation if Congress does not fix DACA. The meeting was streamed online as if it were a reality show. Don’t we already have C-SPAN? The topic of Immigration always comes up when no other political issues need to be solved. This time a fix to DACA might be tied to a bill to avoid a government shutdown. Immigration has not be a political issue alone. The issue is raised before election for the House or the Senate or before the Presidential election. The issue is raised to either get votes from those who support immigration or to get votes from those that do not support immigration. Politicians will first take a side depending on the votes that they need. Politicians do not put the people affect by immigration reform or DACA.   Now the issue is upfront for the next 10 days.
