Entitlement

Texas teacher accused of asking student about immigration status during class | kvue.com

One definition of entitlement is the belief that one is inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment. After our recent election and executive orders, particularly the order on immigration, how are people coping with this order. For some it is fear of being deported, which includes United States Citizens that might be targeted because they belong to the targeted Ethnic group. For United States Citizens that do not belong to the targeted ethnic group, is there a sense of entitlement?

The two stories that I share makes me wonder if there is a sense of entitlement for some United States Citizens. The worker asking of the customer needs boxes does not sound so sincere. Is it possible that she was offering boxes out of concern or was there underlying sarcasm in her remarks with her offer? It is hard to give this worker the benefit of the doubt, I would not know how I would feel if I was in the customers situation. For some of this ethic group, the situation can happen to any of us.

Asking students of their immigration status, might come from concern. At the same time, asking in front of a classroom does not sound like concern. It does violate FERPA laws.

I would fear that examples like this might become a new normal in our communities. We don’t know if there are similar incidents in communities that have not been reported. I can only hope that responses to these type of events are civil. I also hope that we can have a discussion like we had to make progress in race relations that led us to the world that we lived in three months ago.
